New Build Garden Design for Retirement Living
The Challenge
To transform a new-build’s blank canvas into a garden that felt established, alive, and connected to nature. The brief called for increased biodiversity and a welcoming habitat for wildlife, while also creating a calm, restorative space.
With an upcoming retirement on the horizon, the garden needed to become a rewarding hobby as well as a place to unwind - including space for a dedicated art studio away from the house.
The Solution
A palette of aged timbers was introduced to give the garden an immediate sense of maturity and character. Long-flowering, pollinator-friendly planting provides year-round seasonal interest while supporting bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.
A subtle water feature enhances biodiversity and introduces gentle background sound, adding to the garden’s calming atmosphere. To support the hobby aspect of the brief, we incorporated raised growing beds, a greenhouse, and espaliered fruit trees - blending productivity seamlessly into the overall design.
The Result
A beautifully layered garden designed for relaxation, creativity, and connection with nature. Sheltered beneath the dappled shade of a flowering wisteria, the space is ideal for entertaining guests or enjoying quiet moments surrounded by planting.
The garden now offers dedicated areas for growing fruit and vegetables, alongside a bespoke art studio that provides a peaceful retreat - a true extension of the home and a garden built to be enjoyed every day, thoughtfully designed by Capel Gardens.
